RSL COMMUNITY CULTURAL DISPLAY CASE.
The Community Cultural Display Case is a joint project sponsored by the Merimbula RSL Club and administered by the Merimbula-Imlay Historical Society Inc. The purpose is to present exhibitions which record the history and cultural activities of the Bega Valley Shire with emphasis on the Merimbula, Pambula area. The venue of the Display Case is the main foyer of the RSL Club in Main Street, Merimbula, which is located directly across the road from the Historical Society operated Old School Museum.
The intention of the project is to mount a range of exhibitions with a maximum of seven per year, to showcase the work of the many voluntary groups which are active in the local district. The venue allows an exposure of up to eight weeks on a particular aspect of cultural heritage, an opportunity which had not been available in Merimbula in the past. Each exhibit has a direct reference to the history of the voluntary group and in the case of craft displays, traces the development of the works and the techniques used.
The Historical Society is responsible for administering the project, setting the timetable and liaising with the other groups scheduled to mount displays. It also stages its own exhibitions at least twice a year. The RSL provided the funds for the design and construction of the museum standard display case and for the ongoing cost of payment for a part time coordinator, who assists the groups with formatting the material to ensure a uniform high standard of exhibits. Since the launch of the project in September 2005, thirty five different groups have worked with the Historical Society to showcase their particular interests. The project is an outstanding example of the benefits of cooperation between a small volunteer operated Museum and a commercial Club.
